A great time touring the magnificence of the Southeastern U.S.
We all have seen the headlines, and the stories on television news about the amazing travel bargains in flying to the Caribbean, taking a European river cruise, spending a long weekend in Las Vegas or at a Mexican beach, or taking a Mediterranean cruise. But for many, the bright lights or soft sands are not what they're looking for. For many travelers, staying close to home is the name of the game.
Here's a charming tour of some of the best that the deep south has to offer-
Day 1: Jacksonville, FL - Tour Begins
Experience the best of Georgia and South Carolina as you turn back the
pages of time and explore the meaningful history, rich hospitality and
scenic soul of America’s South. This evening meet your fellow travelers
for a welcome dinner.
This morning travel south to the United States' oldest city, St. Augustine, which is known as the "Ancient City." Enjoy time on your own to explore and learn about the city’s rich heritage. You may choose to visit one of many museums or simply enjoy strolling through the narrow Old World streets lined with restaurants and unique shops. This afternoon you arrive at Jekyll Island.
This morning you are treated to a tour of the Jekyll Island Historic Landmark District - one of the nation’s largest restoration projects. Here you will have a chance to explore the 240-acre river edge and see grand “cottages” once belonging to such notables as the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts and J.P. Morgan. Next, a tour of quaint St. Simons Island highlights the wonderful Museum of Coastal History and the 106' tall St. Simons Lighthouse. Later, enjoy leisure time to explore the shops and restaurants in the village.
This morning, travel north along the coast of Georgia, home of the Golden Isles, where you see vast marshlands, winding rivers and beautiful beaches. Arrive into the historic riverside city of Savannah, the largest National Historic Landmark area in the United States. This afternoon enjoy a guided tour of Savannah's historic district. Experience southern charm first-hand with a stroll along the cobblestone-paved Factors Walk and River Street, where old cotton warehouses have been converted into trendy shops, taverns and restaurants. Your local tour concludes with a visit to the Andrew Low Home and Gardens. Learn about the mission and driving force behind the creation of the Girl Scouts and its founder, Juliette Low. Enjoy the home’s beautiful formal gardens and carriage house, the first national headquarters of the Girl Scouts. Tonight's dinner features authentic southern cuisine at Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room, a Savannah tradition for over 60 years.
Depart Savannah and travel north en route to the charming town of Beaufort, "Queen of the Carolina Sea Islands." You may choose to tour the historic district in a horse-drawn carriage. Later, arrive in Charleston, where history is literally found around every corner and magnificent formal gardens grace much of the historic district, adding to the beauty of the Colonial, Antebellum and Victorian architecture.
See for yourself why Charleston has been deemed the “charm spot of the south.” Today you will embark on a guided tour of the city highlighting the many historic homes and restored buildings. You also stop at the battery overlooking Fort Sumter where, on April 12, 1861, the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Following your tour, you will experience southern plantation living when you visit Boone Hall, one of the low country’s largest cotton plantations. This evening join your fellow travelers for a farewell diner.
Your experience of true southern charm and hospitality is sure to stay dear to your heart for years to come.
